Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) are a public infrastructure company that manages the entire chain of electricity and water, from electricity and water production to transmission and distribution, to its customers across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors in the United Arab Emirates. With a workforce of over 11,000 people, they are a global leader in delivering innovative, sustainable energy services.

Smart Grid expansion requires accurate metering solution

DEWA were looking to launch their ‘Smart Applications via Smart Grid and Meters’ initiative, which aimed to develop an advanced infrastructure capable of supporting Dubai's efforts to become the smartest and happiest city in the world. To achieve this, DEWA required smart meters that could help them expand their Smart Grids and meet the demands of new and existing customers, as well as improve efficiency and save costs. They needed highly accurate solutions that could seamlessly integrate with their network, provide high levels of interoperability, and communicate remotely.

It was essential that DEWA could achieve the government’s sustainability goals and promote the smarter use of electricity throughout Dubai with their ‘Smart Applications via Smart Grid and Meters’ initiative.

DEWA required metering solutions that could provide high performance, accurate data with long lasting performance, seamless integration, and compatible NIC modules to help optimise operations and streamline meter readings and billing processes.

Kamstrup worked closely with DEWA and delivered 20,000 OMNIPOWER® Three Phase meters with NIC communication.

Key product features

The OMNIPOWER® Three Phase electricity meter is optimised for smart metering systems and offers pinpoint measuring accuracy and multiple features designed to maximise the utilisation of utility assets. With no moving parts, it is robust and reliable, withstanding shocks and impacts during installation and use. Plus, with extensive voltage quality measurements, power quality logging capabilities, and detailed information and alarms that indicate the exact location of any voltage quality issues, it gives utilities detailed insights that can be used to measure usage, react to any issues, and reduce the cost of poor voltage quality.

The meter is open for a wide range of communication modules like radio, NB-IoT, GSM, GPRS, 3G and M-Bus, providing seamless integration with many pre-existing systems. The modular construction of the meter enables the utility to add or change the communication module in the meter without disconnecting it, avoiding supply interruptions for the consumer. At the same time, the meter offers seamless integration and flexibility by providing the DLMS/COSEM data collection protocol as a system integration interface. The OMNIPOWER® 3 phase electricity meters supplied to DEWA were connected to the DEWA RF Mesh network, providing many benefits to DEWA customers which help them monitor, manage, and control their consumption proactively.
