Mölndal Energi achieves 100% reading performance with future-proof electricity metering
Swedish energy company upgrades to fully digitalised electricity grid, improving operational efficiency through data-driven decision-making.

A brief introduction
Mölndal Energi is an energy company based just south of Gothenburg. They supply 23,000 electricity network customers, 2,400 district heating customers, 11 district cooling customers, and 48 000 electricity trading customers from all parts of Sweden.
To optimise its electricity grid, the energy company wanted a complete system for smart electricity metering, digitalising the entire grid to become more data-driven and proactive in their grid management. As part of this solution, Kamstrup delivered 23,000 OMNIA® e-meters for the new system.
In October 2024 the new smart metering system was ready for take-off. To tell us about how their new solution is performing, we have talked to Oskar Finnerman, Project Manager at Mölndal Energi.

Finding the right solution to realise bold ambitions
Mölndal Energi were used to using lots of different meters – different models from different suppliers. Although they managed to meet billing requirements, collecting the data was often difficult and time-consuming.
“Our vision to have a smart system and use all our meter data was hard to fulfil,” says Oskar Finnerman. “Data access was an issue, data collection was an issue, and it took a lot of work to make that happen.”
Mölndal Energi aspired to enhance their data-driven approach by leveraging data for innovation beyond simply issuing bills. To meet this objective, they identified the need for a robust metering infrastructure capable of collecting extensive, relevant data while ensuring seamless accessibility. To achieve their ambitions, they determined that relying on a single meter supplier and a unified data collection system would be essential.“We wanted high-quality meters that could collect a lot of data and send the data to one system, while we also wanted a supplier that would take a lot of responsibility for integrating the new system. Kamstrup was the best supplier for that.”
Achieving 100% reading performance
First off, Mölndal Energi needed meters with outstanding communication capabilities, able to transmit high-quality data to their data collection system. If you ask Oskar Finnerman, that’s exactly what they got.
“Something that has really exceeded our expectations is how well these meters are able to communicate. We have meters in some really odd places, such as basements surrounded by rock and inside forests, and even those meters are available for communication. This is so amazing!”
Using cellular IoT communication technology, the energy company’s new Kamstrup meters deliver data every 15 minutes. In February 2025, they reached a perfect meter reading performance of 100%, receiving data from all their 23,000 electricity meters.
Limiting field visits to an absolute minimum
As part of their new solution, Mölndal Energi wanted to improve their operational efficiency by reducing the time spent on manual tasks as much as possible. In short, they wished to do most of their work from the office and reduce unnecessary field trips.
“It takes a lot of time to go out to a customer, make an appointment, and finally do the work. Before changing to Kamstrup meters, we did a lot of searching and complex integrations. We had to visit customers, install antennas… In general, a lot of work was spent trying to connect meters that failed to communicate with our systems.”
With their new Kamstrup solution in place, the Swedish energy company can finally do most operations efficiently from the office. Oskar Finnerman explains: “With our new solution, we can do disconnects from the office, we can update the firmware from the office. In general, we rarely need to disturb our customers for meter-related reasons.”

Fixing faults before customers even notice them
With the data they now receive from all their meters, including alarms in case of various irregularities, Mölndal Energi has gone from being predominantly reactive to suddenly gaining proactive control over the low-voltage grid.
“Now we get these alarms from the system, which have enabled us to find so many new things in our grid. What really makes us happy is when we can fix a fault before our customer is impacted by it. This has become a very important goal for us, and our new meters allow us to achieve this goal.”
These changes have also meant that customer communication has been turned upside down, focusing on the positive rather than the negative. As Oskar Finnerman says, “the interactions we have now are more like, ‘hey, we found an error and it’s fixed now,’ instead of them contacting us about something that doesn’t work.”
Cooperating with one single supplier
When asked about the cooperation between Mölndal Energi and Kamstrup, Oskar Finnerman highlights how comfortable it has been having just one supplier taking responsibility for carrying out the project.
“We had a great cooperation with open communication. Only very few issues occurred, and we were able to solve them really well. We enjoyed having just one contact point handling the meters, the communication, and the responsibility of the subcontractor setting up the new infrastructure.”
Embracing the future with calmness and confidence
With their new metering system in place, Mölndal Energi is ready to take on the future. As Oskar Finnerman says, “with our new infrastructure in place, we feel comfortable and certain that whatever comes to mind, today or 10 years in the future, our meters and infrastructure won’t be an issue.”
In his words, it’s like a completely new door has opened, presenting both a new way of thinking and the means to go ahead and realize their new ideas. In this way, optimising the grid is no longer a question of adjusting to limitations, but about finding the best actions in a sea of possibilities to optimise for maximum efficiency.
“We want to work more proactively, using AI data analysis to better understand our customers’ consumption and continually increase our productivity. And with Kamstrup on our team, we feel very comfortable that we can make it happen.”
