Unlocking the value of digitalised district heating

Remote meter reading is no longer performed for the sole purpose of billing district heating customers. In recent years, increasing digitalisation has created a new understanding of the fact that smart meter data can be used for so much more e.g. operations optimisation and end-user engagement.

However, the potential in smart meter data is only unlocked when utilities have the right tools to turn their data into valuable knowledge they can act on.

Choosing the right supplier
For utilities about to invest in making the switch to the next generation of metering systems, perhaps the biggest challenge is choosing the right supplier: one who can both provide the full solution and ensure that they get full value from it.

Kamstrup’s value chain includes everything from the meter itself to the communication that enables efficient data collection, the software that allows effective billing and customer service, and finally advanced analytics bringing the meter data to life.

High-quality meters and efficient communication are the very foundation for a utility’s business, but the higher up you are in this chain, the more value your system will create in terms of reduced costs, more targeted investments and improved customer service. You, therefore, need a solution that not only collects data but also creates real value from it – and a supplier with a proven track record of delivering exactly that.

Kamstrup wants to be more than a metering manufacturer. Our strong and strategic focus on innovation means that 25% of our workforce work in product development including 20 employees dedicated to working exclusively on data analytics.

You need a solution that not only collects data but also creates real value from it – and a supplier with a proven track record of delivering exactly that.

SCADA for district heating distribution
A result of our continuous investment in maximising the value our customers get from their data is the recent launch of our analytics platform, Heat Intelligence, which professor in energy technology at Halmstad University, Sven Werner, calls SCADA for district heating distribution.

Heat Intelligence combines facts about your distribution network (pipe length, dimension, insulation, etc.) with data from your smart meters to calculate exactly how heat travels in your infrastructure and what that means for your heat supply. This results in a whole new level of transparency that enables you to map your heat loss, monitor network load and capacity, identify what stresses your network – and act accordingly.

The tool was developed in close cooperation with our customers and already a number of additional functionalities are in development.

Taking your next step
It’s one thing to know where you want to end up but knowing how to get there is quite another. For most utilities, the reality is that smart metering is a step-by-step journey. At Kamstrup, we pride ourselves on creating that journey together with each of our customers based on their needs and the solution they have today. Because no matter where you start your journey, your next step will always be the most important one.

No matter where you start your journey, your next step will always be the most important one.
