Kamstrup has successfully participated in an EU-wide tender organised by GELSENWASSER AG and has been awarded the contract for the delivery of 50,000 digital water meters. The foundation stone for this cooperation was laid on 22 December 2020 when Kamstrup, GELSENWASSER AG and PHYSEC GmbH, a specialist in innovative security and connectivity concepts, contractually agreed to launch an electronic drinking water meter with LoRa TLS communication module on the German market the following year. So far, around 24,000 meters have been successfully installed.

The order for the 50,000 units has already been placed. The roll-out of around 35,000 LoRaWAN TLS meters will take place next year. By the end of 2028, around 180,000 water meters are to be converted to LoRaWAN technology as part of the exchange of meters.

“The digital water meter is characterised by TLS encryption as a unique selling point. This is essential for us for security reasons as we read data via LoRa”,

“The digital water meter is characterised by TLS encryption as a unique selling point. This is essential for us for security reasons as we read data via LoRa”, explains Frank Stefanski, Head of Measurement Technology at GELSENWASSER AG. PHYSEC combines the advantages of the LoRaWAN radio network with TLS encryption, which is intended for internet communication.

Ingo Hundhausen, Country Manager DE & AT, Kamstrup A/S Germany, explains further: “The combined know-how of three companies with different areas of expertise has established the state of the art for remotely readable water meters via a wide area network (WAN) in Germany. This complies with the protection profiles and technical guidelines of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and has already been authenticated by the state data protection authorities.”

“We are delighted to have won the EU-wide tender, which is to be realised over the next two years, and we are grateful for the exceptionally good cooperation”, says Per Trøjbo, Vice President, Sales, Water, Kamstrup A/S. He adds: “We are convinced that the LoRaWAN TLS water meter will establish itself as a "market meter" in Germany.”
