Danish metering solutions provider Kamstrup has won a contract to supply around 193,000 intelligent water meters to the city of Antwerp.

The city’s water utility, Water-Link, unveiled the plans in front of a large media contingent at the grandiose Ant-werp Town Hall on Thursday 23rd June.

Hydroko, a longtime partner of Belgian water utilities, awarded Kamstrup with what is the largest water meter contract so far for the Danish company. It comes as a result of the large investments in technological development and innovation Kamstrup has made in recent years, which have spurred the growth of its water metering business.

This landmark project will see Kamstrup’s hugely popular MULTICAL® 21 intelligent water meter integrated with the IoT communication technology Sigfox.

What this means for Water-Link is that it has the technology required to meet its needs.
“The intelligent water meter is the foundation for effectively managing drinking water in a sustainable manner,” says Water-Link Project Engineer, Jan Van Cappellen.

Kamstrup’s partner, Hydroko, is also thrilled with the potential benefits of this project. Mark Indigne, CEO of Hydroko says: “In Kamstrup we have found the innovative and flexible partner we needed to realise this impressive project. Internationally, we are setting the pace and this contract with Water-Link is a real milestone, not only for us.”

The pinpoint accuracy of Kamstrup’s state-of-the-art intelligent water meters will enable Water-Link to measure extremely low flows and detect leaks, bursts and tampering – ensuring water loss is discovered quickly.
“The exact knowledge about water consumption our meters provide will allow Water-Link to optimise its operations throughout its network and provide an increased level of service to its customers,” explains Kamstrup’s Senior Vice President of Water Meters, Per Trøjbo.

The project will start in the next few months with a 12-month pilot of 1000 meters. After a successful pilot, the rest of the meters will be installed towards the end of 2017, with the project due to be completed in 2021.

Demand for Kamstrup’s intelligent water meters is set to quadruple over the next four years and at the company’s headquarters in Stilling, Denmark, construction has already begun on a new state-of-the-art, dedicated water meter production facility to meet the demand.

“In Kamstrup we have found the innovative and flexible partner we needed to realise this impressive project. Internationally, we are setting the pace and this contract with Water-Link is a real milestone, not only for us.”

Milestone order

Kamstrup’s CEO, Per Asmussen, says this project is likely to grab the attention of large water utilities around the world.

“This project is testament to Kamstrup’s flexibility and willingness to go the extra mile. Our experience and ability to integrate our innovative solutions with other communication systems are of great interest to many utilities,” explains Per Asmussen.
