The national energy company, Nukissiorfiit was challenged by costly meter reading due to topography and climate as well as considerable revenue loss from late or missing payments. 

After replacing its entire energy meter fleet with smart meters and a radio based automated meter reading system, the company has achieved improved energy management and significant financial savings.

Topographical and climatic challenges – including an often non-existent infrastructure – meant that meter reading was extremely costly and time-consuming. The many manual tasks entailed a high risk of error, and some of the old mechanical meters did not measure accurately due to incorrect configuration and wear and tear.
Also, in many households, billing was based on estimates rather than actual consumption, which caused both customer complaints and an additional workload in the making of the yearly settlement. 

Another significant concern was the difficult task of disconnecting the power supply due to late or missing payments. This required unpleasant and costly onsite visits – often to small villages, some of which could only be reached by helicopter or boat. 

To meet these challenges, Nukissiorfiit wanted a technically stable and flexible smart metering solution – and one that would do more than just provide data for billing.

Smart energy management means savings and simpler handling of meters

The smart metering solution has meant a number of benefits for Nukissiorfiit that have saved them both time, trouble and money. The company is now spared the manual yearly reading and with the remote disconnect function, disconnecting and reconnecting the power supply has become both simpler and less expensive.

Precise and more frequent meter readings allow the company to monitor consumption patterns and to estimate load profiles. Compared to previously, where the meters were only read once a year, Nukissiorfiit can therefore

now be proactive and inform single households in case of extraordinary consumption patterns.


Customer insight inspires energy conscious behaviour

Increased energy awareness is a prerequisite for energy savings in private households. Smart metering allows concrete and visible communication of the energy consumption, and so Nukissiorfiit has designated a part of their website to consumption monitoring. 

Here customers can follow their consumption and see it compared to their local area average. The instant access to information about the household consumption – down to hourly values for the electricity meters – has enabled customers to detect inappropriate energy use and understand the worth of choosing energy efficient products.

Smart meter data is the basis for the sustainable energy production of the future

Nukissiorfiit’s overall ambition is to consistently deliver better and less expensive electricity, water and heat with consideration of the environment and sustainability. 

As a result, today, a good 60 % of the company’s energy sales is based on renewable energy.

Documentation of the need for energy in the individual areas is a prerequisite for knowing what will be required of future installations. Precise meter data can provide exactly that. 

In this way, the improved data collection provides a strongly enhanced basis for decision making regarding the future implementation of an even more sustainable energy production.

Flexible solution, reliable system, precise data


The project included a total of 46,000 intelligent electricity, heat and water meters connected to a radio based automated meter reading system. Each meter functions as a router for up to 70 other meters. This ensures that every meter can be reached by several different routes resulting in an above 99 % performance on daily reading.
The system is an RF-mesh solution, which has the advantage of being unaffected by overloads, power outages or other disturbances in the grid. 

Up to 700 meters are mutually connected in networks that communicate with a concentrator transmitting the data to the energy company via GSM/GPRS. Single meters that are placed too distant for radio transmission, were fitted with a point-to-point GSM module and a SIM card transmitting directly to the energy company's central system.
