I was attending a meeting in Brussels in the policy committee of Euroheat and Power revolving around the policy framework for district heating and cooling in Europe. An essential part of this work is to monitor the reputation of the clean energy package directly affecting the district heating and cooling industry.

From October 2020, the Energy Efficiency Directive requires that all new heat meters must be remotely readable. Simultaneously, information about the actual consumption has to be shared with the final customers in order to obtain an increased transparency in the industry as well as to create customer-awareness in terms of consumption. Additionally, by 2027 all existing meters will have to be  upgraded as well.

Here at Kamstrup, we embrace these initiatives as they will pave the road for digitalisation in the district heating industry. And why wouldn’t we embrace digitalisation, when it has already delivered clear and measurable results?

These include a 12% reduction of pipeline losses, network temperatures lowered by 6-8 degrees and a 2,5% reduction of the annual heat production, all adding up to significant savings and increased competitiveness.
