Project: Höganäs AMR System

Electricity consumption will be read automatically in Höganäs. The installation of electricity meters and Automatic Meter Reading equipment is ongoing in Höganäs after Höganäs Energi, in April this year,
signed a contract with Kamstrup.

Over the next 2 years Kamstrup will project manage and supply a system that automatically reads consumption data from 13.500 customer electricity meters. Kamstrup produces both the operating system and the electricity meters.

"I’m convinced that we have chosen the right supplier", says Höganäs Energi’s Managing Director, Benny Ulmestig.

Höganäs Energi invited tenders for the project beginning of Year 2005 and Kamstrup was chosen, because they met all the specified requirements from Höganäs relating to the supplier, the system and the validity of metering data.

The task is to establish a network, which gives Höganäs full operational reliability and 100% metering data on all meters.

The 13.500 meters are installed in an area covering approximately 80-90 km², comprising both industrial and residential areas. Indeed some of the residential properties are occupied only at holiday times and are frequently unoccupied. This creates an additional challenge for conventional meter reading!

A key tool, used in the project, is the GIS (Geographical Information System). This helps identify such factors as the topology of the area and the accurate location of the meters. Equipped with this, Kamstrup can project the correct number and placing of transmitters, to ensure reliable data transmission to the utility.

The investment enables Höganäs to save on the expense of manual read-out and reporting of the electricity consumption for those 13.500 customers, who will receive the new electricity meters.

With the new technology the consumption data can be read more frequently and more simply, directly from a main computer placed at the utility. This has the additional benefit of not needing to disturb the customer to read their meter.

It also provides a new service to the customers of Höganäs , where they can actually see and track their electricity consumption via the Internet.

If you would like to read more about the project in Höganäs, please check the updates on this page. We will follow the various milestones in the project, from installation and system tuning, through test and final operation.

With vital feed-back from Höganäs and using Kamstrup’s project model, we will provide an insight into this large scale system project as it evolves. We will also discuss the contribution made by our leading edge technology.
